Croatian state archives in Osijek
Croatia State Archives in Osijek is a public institution founded by the Republic of Croatia and the territorial jurisdiction now extends to the area of Osijek-Baranja County and is one of 18 regional archives.
The archival service in Osijek is currently placed in an historic building of former military barracks (Kamila Firingera 1). The barracks were built in 1714 and adapted to the needs of the archives in 1971. Since the holdings of the archive have increased considerably over the years the Croatian State Archives in Osijek makes a lot of effort in obtaining a building of another old military barracks (Kamila Firingera 3) to gain more space for its archival funds and collections.
State Archives in Osijek in its storage holds about 1,500 archival funds and collections, with more than 8,000 linear meters of material and more than 50,000 photos. In addition to professional activities, State Archives in Osijek systematically promotes the awareness of cultural heritage, organizes exhibitions, book presentations, lectures, publishes professional and scientific papers, systematically works on the computerization of the institution and digitization of historical records, and it is a part of the National Archival Information System.
Modern archival service in Croatia is nowadays regulated by the Archives and Archival Institutions Act that defines archival service as a mandatory public service of special importance for the Republic of Croatia and archival holdings as cultural heritage. Permanent task of the Archives in Osijek is to preserve, keep and give archival funds and collections to use to experts and scientists, but also to broader public, and at same time it promotes the value and importance of written legacy. The Archives regularly organizes training courses for their employees, workshops for pupils and students, it organizes exhibitions from its rich treasury, publishes scientific and professional papers and presents original archival materials, organizes presentations of books and lectures which are connected to history, auxiliary historic sciences or to archival science.
One of the most important people who gave a great contribution to the development of The Croatian State Archives in Osijek was dr. Kamilo Firinger, founder of the institution, a long-time employee and Director of the Archives. He and other employees of the Archives worked industriously on turning the State Archives in Osijek into one of most prestigious cultural institutions of the city and the whole region.
In the upcoming period one of the most important tasks is to obtain new additional space for the increasing number of archival funds as well as to enable easier accessibility of these materials by making a digital form of it which would also make it easier assessable over the Internet to broader public.
In the year 2014 the Croatian State Archives in Osijek marks the hundredth anniversary of the beginning of World War I, and a rich program with numerous events is planed for the occasion.
